Hello friends! It has been a minute or 18 months…you know an artist needs time to be inspired, let the spirit move them, create in their own time or as I like to call it: procrastinate and give zero fucks.
Before I begin to share my latest thoughts, I feel I should clarify some things regarding my credentials. Shockingly I have some new followers/subscribers and even people who have known me for a while may be shocked to learn that I am NOT a MD, nor do I have a PhD or for that matter any other degrees that are related to medicine, fitness or nutrition. And much to my husband’s dismay, I also do not possess the knowledge (yet) of how to monetize diatribes on these subjects.
I do have a BS in Psychology from the University of Colorado- Boulder. But honestly, I am still not a particularly good skier, nor do I enjoy smoking pot- so not sure I really earned the degree. I am good at sniffing out bullshit though- which if you did not know is what Freud and Jung really meant- they just used fancy words like psychoanalysis and transference.
With all those caveats, the one thing I definitely am is a 54 year old female in the throes of menopause- and I strongly do not recommend- I give it zero stars. I recall growing up and hearing about the “hot flashes” like they happen on a predictable schedule, are pretty short and as long as you have a fan- you are fine. These are lies. Thankfully now the world is talking about menopause more openingly. It was even on CBS Sunday Morning today- and I am thankful they waited for Jane Pauley to navigate this one, as I am not sure I could have listened to Charles Osgood in his bow tie share the latest treatments for vaginal dryness.
I mean, women really can have it all y’all! I would love to see the marketing materials in the womb:
“Hey zygotes you can be male and always have a way worse cold than your spouse OR female- where on top of having a vagina (it is actually worse than it sounds) you also get a period (we will explain later) for thirty years….but wait there’s more! You then will go through this fabulous thing called menopause where you will have years of mood swings, hot flashes, dryness in your nether regions, brain fog, depression, weight gain, joint pain, headaches and lots more!! The best part is this will all happen while anyone who lives at your house will still ask you every fucking day: 1. What’s For Dinner? And 2. Can you venmo me?”
And like anything else, once you go deep on the interwebs, talk to real Dr.’s and hear from a lot of non- Dr.s that just want to sell you supplements you end up with so much information you want to cry- and you probably will. Here are my cliff notes of the important shit to know- but remember Brooke Lowry just has a BS in BS…not a real Dr.!
Hormone Replacement Therapy is seriously most of the time just a teeny little patch of Estrogen the size of a dime you stick on your lower abdomen twice a week and a pea size pill of Progesterone you take every night. The name “Hormone Replacement Therapy” makes it sound like you are about to get strapped to a gurney by Nurse Ratched- very poorly named IMO. And no joke, this takes care of 85% of all symptoms and improves your sleep immensely! Again- ask a real Dr. about how this would work for you.
Intermittent Fasting We all need to be doing it. It has the same impact on my energy level as Whole 30 does- within days and it gets easier and easier. And that weight around the middle seriously falls off. I never thought I could make it from 8 pm to 12 pm without eating, but now some days I actually make it until 2! And yes, what you eat still matters but not as much as when. I recommend getting Fast Like a Girl by Dr. Mindy Pelz to get you started. A huge shoutout to my friend Bobbie for encouraging me to stick with it and cheering me on.
Get on the right supplements- And I want to clarify that all that shit advertised on Facebook and Instagram that will take away your “menobelly” and other bullshit claims DOES NOT WORK- just trust me, I have wasted the money, time and stomach discomfort so you don’t have to. The only caveat here is the Seed daily symbiotic as we all need the pro and prebiotic. Here’s what you need: -1. Seed or something like it. 2. A good Multi for Old Ladies- I like the Pure brand. 3. And then Cranberry/d-Mannose…just trust me on this one. And then of course, whatever else your real Dr. recommends.
Talk, Read, Listen and Share– Although there is a lot of bad info, there is also a lot of good information that some really amazing humans are putting out there. A Hat tip to my friend and wellness guru Charlotte Hardwick @flowandnourish for turning me onto the podcast Cracking Open with Molly Carroll, Molly does have credentials, great advice and wonderful conversations with interesting people. Also, The Resetter Podcast with Dr. Mindy Pelz, who wrote Fast Like a Girl is a great listen with such practical advice you can immediately implement. And ladies per usual, keep Mel Robbins in your mental health line up via Insta or her podcast as a daily reminder to love your fucking life!
As I am in the midst of taking Truegrit.biz to the land of substack and finally writing fulltime I would like to give a shoutout to the folks who have kept a firm boot on my ass about writing the past few years: Leslie, Barrie, Holly and Tammie I love you and I thank you. A special shoutout to Hal, who I saw this week at yoga, and he never ceases to say “why aren’t you writing?” and always with such sincerity it warms my heart.
I feel I should clarify that my husband does not ask me about my writing, and I don’t even think he reads most of it- it kind of bothers me, but not really because you know what he does do?
He rarely mentions that I no longer have a paycheck.
He tells me every day that I am pretty or that I look nice- which many times I do not.
He says “Good night, I love you” on the one night a quarter he goes to bed before me.
He is ok with the fact that I love Hank more than him and forces Hank to get in bed with me in the morning and “cuddle” and I really love him a lot for that act of kindness.
He is also a really good kisser and that makes up for a lot of downfalls in my book.
I rediscovered Kacey Musgraves lately and in these menopausal days I have found myself listening to Rainbow again on repeat- now listen to it, don’t watch the video- that I find a tad dark and depressing.
